You must be talking about me, I have been saying a lot about through the Act iV and Canadian Smashing Pumpkins Fans Myspace.
July 7th is generally regarded by many fans (not all) as International Smashing Pumpkins Day. This dates back to the 1998 charity tour. While it was declared SP day in other cities on other days, the first time it was ever declared SP day in their hometown of Chicago was July 7th, 1998. PJuly 7th is special because it landed around the time of the 10th anniversary of SP's first show (as a two-piece- James and Billy.
I go further into my reasoning on the Act IV blog:

For now I will leave you this quote from Billy's post on the O-boards on July 15th, 2001, in the context of the events of July 7th, 2001:
"..I can't say enough good things about this last week...I always felt we had the grea-*test*-('") fans in the world, but now I am convinced...hopefully july 7 can always be a day where we celebrate the history of the band and take time to reach out and help others..."
