James Iha Tries Out Some Sewns
The Importance of Being Earnest James Iha Tries Out Some Sewns James Iha is a man of particular tastes: Back in the ‘90s, when the Japanese-American, Chicago-native was the guitarist of the seminal music act, The Smashing Pumpkins, it was all about alt rock with a side order of psychedelic. Today, as a record producer (he’s just finished a remix for StellaStarr) and co-founder of Scratchie Records (home to the Swedish band The Sounds and the Motor City trio The Sights), his preference has become more New Wave. As to the décor of his NYC apartment – which has been profiled and praised in several publications including The New York Times -- he likes it gilded and rustic. And when it comes to his clothes, he has an inclination towards the cutting-edge. Marc Jacobs, avant-garde Japanese label Undercover, and half a dozen slim-fitting pairs of Diesel jeans (he bought them in bulk seven years ago) fill his closet. Art Deco ballroom chairs, oil paintings of dogs, and frescoed walls encompass his eclectic, Bloomsbury-inspired East Village pad, located just off of Little Tokyo. “I don’t want to live in a white room with all perfect angles – that’s no fun,” he explains. “But I like everything else - my clothes, my music – to be modern.” Enter Earnest Sewn’s Filson jeans, which are cut slim, straight and ultra-modern, but possess a very vintage-looking wash. Curious to see how he’d perceive them (supremely rock ‘n’ roll? Better suited as a wall-hanging in his home? The perfect dog-bed for Sadie, his girlfriend’s Chihuahua?), we sent him a pair to road--*test*-('"): Where he wore them: “To the deli – I needed paper towels and water – and for a walk around the city.” (Iha did, indeed, also bunched them up in our office, to create a makeshift pillow for his pet pooch.) What he wore them with: A T-shirt from Arkansas with a wart hog on it. “I like the wart hog – I think he’s cute.” And a pair of black Adidas Sambas with white stripes. What he thought of the jeans: “The cut is really good – they’re tailored and slim-fitting. The waist is pretty good too, not too high and not too low. They were way too long though , so I had to have them tailored. And I actually really like the wash. It’s vintage, but not pretentious. There aren’t any ridiculous paint-drippings or anything. They’re cool without trying too hard. I’m into them. ~Karin Nelson Pictures of him and his doggie: source: http://www.handsblue.com/say/?c=daily&a=2005-10-13-01
